Somers Falls Short in Comeback versus John Jay
After ending their break with a victory over Eastchester last week, Somers was hoping to follow up with a win over John Jay. The home game on Wednesday January 3, the Tuskers fell behind 21-9 and looked defeated before intermission. But the girls battled back and a three point deficit with two minutes remaining in the game had a comeback in clear view.

John Jay Holds on in 49-42 Win Over Somers
Back from break, John Jay traveled to Somers on Wednesday January 3 and didn’t come out with any rust. The Wolves built a 21-9 second quarter lead and looked well on their way. John Jay Defeats Hen Hud 42-28
Click below last year's photos On Tuesday, December 19, John Jay traveled to Hen Hud and fell behind 28-18. So the next two matches were crucial, and after Austin Omin got his team a six spot, Jake Llanos must have felt the weight of his turn for the entire team. “No, I just focused on my match,” said the 170 pounder, and the results can’t be argued with.

Football For a Buck Tracks the Rise and Fall of the USFL
When the USFL hit the scene, the idea of spring football was pretty intriguing. The new league then signed Herschel Walker and notice was demanded. I probably tuned in and likely didn’t last more than a few plays. The same goes for the first USFL Championship game in 1983. More high profile signings following and the piqued interest ebbed again. None of these people were Giants, so the league was more a nuisance to me, and the move to fall sounded absolutely ridiculous. The three dollar settlement amused in the extreme, and the silliness was appropriately relegated to the dustheap. But when I heard Jeff Pearlman was writing a book, that also sounded intriguing, and I’m glad I gave it more than a passing glance.

Somers Boys Can’t Keep up with Mamaroneck in 72-43 Loss
On Wednesday December 27, Somers traveled down county for the Pelham High School Winter Tournament and faced Mamaroneck in the first game. Growing them big down county, the Tigers had height inside, and at the same time, used the advantage to make plenty of space outside. The combination proved too much, and the Mamaroneck Tigers didn’t waste much time to exert dominance.

Flag Football League Readies for Tournament in San Antonio
Twelve years ago, Adam Kern was managing Somers Sports and thought that introducing flag football to the local community would be a fun activity for local kids to be involved in. Starting with just 42 players, the SCC Body Armor Flag Football League now has 1200 boys and girls, and the success has inspired the founder to take the show on the road for a tournament on December 28-29.

John Jay Goes into Break with Win Over Roosevelt
On Wednesday December 20, John Jay hosted Roosevelt and were looking to improve on their 1-4 record. The holiday season upon us, a loss would mean a momentum change would have to wait until all the presents were opened. So the Wolves were definitely hoping for the right kind of wrap.

A Throwback, Somers defeats Kennedy Catholic in Mike DePaoli Basketball Tournament
In the previous century, when Somers and JFK (Kennedy Catholic) matched up, bragging rights made the competing campuses sizzle, and as the son of Somers basketball coach Mike DePaoli, Gerard DePaoli recalled the times at the tournament that bears his father’s name. “It was a little more wild, I remember the way it used to be,” said the 1982 grad on Saturday December 16, and so maybe with a little nostalgia in mind, the Kennedy Catholic-Somers rivalry has been reborn.

The Killers of the Flower Moon Doesn’t Live up to the Actual Story
Photo : IMDB The Killers of the Flower Moon represents a piece of American History that has been conveniently eliminated from our national consciousness. Between 1918-1931, dozens to hundreds of Osage Indians were murdered to obtain the deeds to their lucrative oil rights. An entire criminal industry sprung from greed and the devaluing of human life, and Martin Scorsese has given us a recounting that requires the attention of every American. So sitting duty bound, the viewer is almost required to like the 3 hour and 17 minute descent. Unfortunately, that’s a lot easier said than done.
