Morgan Unleashed?
He came as a foster dog, timid and scared. He and his brother had wandered in the Carolinas for several months. My father was in the kitchen, far away from him, worrying that he had been growled at. He had growled and barked at me too as I entered the apartment. It was very disconcerting.

Return of the Night Owl
Jack had frosted the window panes with swirling, frozen paisley. The late afternoon sun colored them in peaches, purples, and cobalt blues. It was cold by the windows, but it was warm near the floor heating vents, which pushed hot, dry air into the room. I sat on one with my blanket wrapped around me to trap the heat in. I was the adult in the house; I could do what I liked.

Nieve
I called her Nieve at first, because she came two weeks before a big snowstorm. La nieve is the vocabulary word for snow, in Spanish, but I gave it a Slavic twist. A friend’s mom was going to the Republic of Georgia to teach politics and needed someone to take care of her. So, her name was said as one syllable. Nyev. She was white as snow, with blue eyes.
