Bio

"Seafaring" was inspired by Enya's "Caribbean Blue," and "The Seafarer" followed suit, but was also influenced by Sarah Kay's poetry. My essay on Game of Thrones won 3rd place here in the Vocal GOT contest! :)

Honeycomb
When the storm came and knocked out the streetlamp, I was able to see inside of the clouded glass that had once pointed to the sky and divined the stars. A supposedly empty vessel, teeming with life. Filled with honeycomb and dripping with nectar, the bees swarmed to mourn their disrupted home.

On the day that I had been admitted to the hospital because my doctor said I was at risk for having an imminent heart attack, I looked fine. In fact, I even felt fine too. Better than fine, actually. Just that morning my boss had announced at a department meeting that I saved our institution approximately 15 weeks worth of labor in about 15 minutes. All in all, I was actually having a pretty good day, and I was feeling pretty good about myself too. Of course, that all changed when my doctor asked if I had someone to drive me to the emergency room, or if she should call an ambulance for me after a routine appointment.

2020: A Year in Verse
When I think of how 2020 began, what comes to mind are the barrage of social media posts claiming that 2020 would be "our year" and better yet a revival of the roaring 20's. This prompted me to imagine the year starting off like the epic party scene from The Great Gatsby with Fergie's "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody" blasting in the background.

What the Women of Westeros Mean to Me
I have always been a firm believer in the magic of how the right book or series can seem to find a person when they are most in need of it. I, however, avoided the call of the Game of Thrones franchise for quite some time. Despite how many people assured me that I would enjoy the books and television show, I refused to watch it on the grounds of how much blood and violence I’d heard was in it. As a chronically ill and severely depressed person suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following a fatal car accident I had been in at the age of 15, I had a tendency to be extremely wary of anything I might find potentially triggering. That is, until a day came when I reached an ultimate low, when the circumstances of my life managed to get so bad that I was convinced nothing in this world could possibly trigger or upset me more than I already was. Seeking an escape in problems that were not my own, I began to binge read/watch the series and to my surprise what I found in its volumes was not triggering, but instead cathartic as defined in terms of Greek theatre: “The purification and purgation of emotions through art that results in renewal and restoration.” In other words, the show slowly but surely came to mean one thing to me: Healing. Through the plights of the show’s leading female protagonists in particular, I found a means to better process, understand, and ultimately overcome trauma of my own.
