You're Strong Enough for Unmedicated Childbirth
First off, it IS an option I know, I know. Receiving an epidural or another form of pain medication during labor has been so ingrained in American culture that you may not have even thought about any other way to do it. And, if you did, you likely got remarks from providers, friends, or family such as, “Are you crazy?”; “Why would you do that?”; and “Just wait until it's happening, you’ll be begging for drugs!” But guess what? The epidural has only been around since the end of the 19th century, and wasn’t anything like what we have today until the 1970s. Before then, women relied on brute strength and tolerance. You were, in fact, BUILT FOR THIS.

What World Breastfeeding Week Means to Me
Both of my pregnancies went respectfully well. I've been told that I'm practically a pro at natural childbirth. Really though, my nurse with my first said “Some women’s bodies just know exactly what to do!” My midwife was so upset letting me go as a patient after my second that she wants me to have more. I'm cool with bragging just a bit, because on the other hand when it comes to breastfeeding, it didn't come nearly as natural to me.

Upon giving my three and a half-year-old daughter her first tub of slime to have loads of supervised fun with, I made it a point to tell her father not to allow her to take it to her room. She has a habit of stashing toys in there for nap time. I won't point any fingers here, but this is his fault.

Every summer the rising heat brings the wave of headlines reading “Another Child Left to Die in Hot Car,” and the masses screaming, “What is wrong with people?! How could they be so careless?” Which leads me to think, everybody gets so distressed about people leaving their babies in hot cars because dozens of children perish every year. It's common sense to NOT DO THAT, right? So why is it that we still practically condone things like unsafe sleep, feeding, and car seat habits when THOUSANDS of children are dying?

EMTs, police officers, firefighters, social/case workers, medical professionals… they’re the bleeding hearts, the empaths. They often see the very worst of us but the majority of them choose their career path with one main goal—to help people. But have you ever run into a cop that just didn’t want to hear your sob story of why you were speeding? That nurse who was a complete bitch when you went to the emergency room for your cold? Did you maybe think they had no place working with the public? Well, the reality is they’re probably experiencing Compassion Fatigue and Burnout, things any decent person has experienced whether they work directly with people or not.
