Leaving Public School in the Age of COVID
We had already been considering disenrolling our son from public school before COVID, but we were afraid to homeschool. I have multiple science related degrees, my husband is an engineer, but we weren’t teachers. We questioned opportunities for socialization and extra-curricular activities. We didn’t know how to return him to public school if he desired at a later time. We didn’t know what state law would require for reporting. Change and the unknown caused fear.

The Life of Mary Joyce
Mary Joyce was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin in 1899. Around 18 months of age, her mother died, leaving her and her brothers to be raised by an aunt and uncle. Mary pursued nursing and graduated from Mercy Nursing School located in Chicago, Illinois.

Modern Lupercalia
The word February is derived from the Latin word Februum, which means purification. In Roman times (possibly before), the festival of Lupercalia was observed in Rome to avert evil spirits and purify the city, causing health and fertility to be released. Another term for this festival was dies Februatus, named after the instruments of purification called februa.

On January 24, 1848, James Wilson Marshall, discovered flakes of gold in the American River at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Coloma, California. Those flakes were the beginning of what we now call the California Gold Rush.

First in Flight
Jean Pierre Blanchard, born July 4, 1753 in Petit Andelys, France, was a French balloonist who made the first aerial crossing of the English Channel, and made the first balloon flight in England, Germany, Belgium, Poland, and North America. In the 1770’s, he worked on the designs of heavier-than-air flying machines based on rowing in air currents with oars and tiller. After witnessing demonstrations by the Montgolfier Brothers, he took up ballooning.

Gladius
The word “gladiator” is derived from “gladius,” which is the Latin word for sword. Historians believe gladiator fights started as a blood rite staged at the funerals of wealthy nobles as a kind of eulogy. The Roman writers Tertullian and Festus, document the Romans belief that human blood helped purify the deceased person’s soul, so these contests may have acted as a crude substitute for human sacrifice. The funeral games later increased in scope, proving hugely popular, and by the end of the 1st century BC, government officials began hosting state-funded games as a way of gaining favor.
