Several years ago, I encountered a situation where I had to break into my own home. I had just returned from visiting a friend across town on a freezing winter night in Montreal. It was around midnight, and the temperature was minus 40 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. As I stood on my front porch, I realized I had forgotten my keys and could see them through the window, lying on the dining room table. After trying all the doors and windows, I considered calling a locksmith but knew it could take a while for them to arrive at that time of night. I also couldn't go back to my friend's house as I had an early flight the next morning and needed to retrieve my passport and suitcase. In a state of desperation and freezing cold, I resorted to breaking through the basement window and covering it with cardboard. It was an expensive fix, but I rationalized it as being no more costly than a locksmith in the middle of the night.

A few years ago, I began to notice a trend in my behavior that made me uncomfortable. From the moment I woke up to the end of the day, my life revolved around screens. I would start my day with my phone, scrolling through Instagram and various apps while still in bed. Then, as I cooked breakfast, I would have my iPad next to the stove. When it was time to work, I would move to my computer, which was connected to even more screens. Throughout the day, my smartwatch would constantly distract me with notifications. But out of all these devices, my phone was the biggest culprit. I could easily spend hours on it every day. So, I decided to challenge myself and essentially get rid of my phone for a month, limiting my usage to only 30 minutes a day. This experiment led me to discover three profound changes in my life. First, my attention span improved. I was able to focus more easily and effortlessly. Second, I had more ideas and my mind was more active, especially when it wandered. And third, I had more plans and thoughts about the future.
