Banshee Barn Owl
It's a quarter to seven in the evening, and Will heads out for his daily trek home from his part-time job at the deli. The leaves crunching beneath his feet are the only reminder that he's made progress on the journey home. He is so preoccupied with other things that he barely notices the regular landmarks on the way. Rather than take the bus and have to transfer twice, in order to get home, this regular trek has proved to be Will's best bet, a straight shot, with no one to bother him. The woods are quiet, save for the chirping of some wayward crickets, complaining in the balmy evening summer heat.

Heidi and the Rainbow Bridge
Our cat, Heidi, was an unrelenting warrior dressed in a cat’s body. A Richmond SPCA rescue, Heidi was a stray found wandering the streets. My daughter adopted her because she had this affectionate head butting when she greeted you. How sweet. When she came home, what I met was a scrawny little creature that I thought maybe I could love with time. After all, she was my daughter’s cat. But she had a special affection for me and would curl up under my chair every day while I worked.

Radiant Beauty
When I had a 9 to 5 office job in the '80s, I remember plastering my face with several layers of makeup, just like every other female in the office. It was the style. Bright red lipstick, loud cheek blush and starched shoulder pads were the norm, the uniform that announced you were vibrant and bright, one of the hip crowd. Mary Kay was my makeup routine of choice. I had a product for every need, from a problem pimple to a quick pick-me-up face spray atomizer to usher in happy hour after a long day at work. I relied on that little face spritz every evening as I left work. Looking back, it was a precursor to taking off my makeup for the day.

Dirty Stirrups Fun
Jen glances up at the kitchen clock. It's only 6:30 a.m., yet she's been up already for two hours. Something about screaming babies and toddlers gives you a blatant disregard for time. She got the chance to grab a quick cat nap after a 3:00 a.m. coddling back to sleep of her cranky, teething 6-month old, but now she is up again, as if a soldier ready for battle, after two cups of coffee already. Time to get breakfast ready for everyone and settle into the morning routine.
