THE RACIST RESPONSE TO LITTLE MERMAID
THE RACIST RESPONSE TO LITTLE MERMAID
The new trailer for The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has already garnered more than a hundred million views, but it's also attracting criticism from some trolls online. Dr. Hallie Bailey stars as Ariel in Disney's new film, and she doesn't look anything like the cartoon character with red hair from the original 1989 classic. The trailer has received 1.5 million dislikes on YouTube, compared to the 1 million likes it drew overall. Then there are the ugly racist tweets: The Little Mermaid is white, not black; really people, we're doing this all over again? She doesn't look anything like they do; they have tails, but she doesn't, and she has red hair – which isn't in the original cartoon at all. How can anyone know that she's a mermaid once again? These Internet racists are upset that a fictional character is being played by a black person – and they have no reason to be angry! You guys realize that Nemo was black too, right? That whole movie was about a fish who couldn't find his dad – so I can safely say that I'm down with calm people now.
