Preservation
Applause broke out through the laboratory as the bird flew a few wobbling meters. Ryan didn't scold then. They'd been working on the wings for the last month or so. It was an exciting development. They'd gotten the shape and angles correct from the beginning, but the birds couldn't seem to connect their wings with the ability to fly.

Becalmed
The cliffs rose up around the cove like crooked teeth. Cassandra floated on her back, enjoying the afternoon sun. She lifted up a hand, watching the droplets of seawater glitter on her skin. Lila and Theo's laughter rang in the background, gliding across the waves. They were pawing at each other like the newlyweds they were. She could hear her husband Oliver struggling to light the barbecue.

Counterfeit Curse
The package waited for Valerie on her desk Monday night. It was a small box, maybe the size of a loaf of bread, wrapped in plain brown paper. No return address. Heavy, though. Valerie was the only one working in the intake office for the museum at night. Not even assistants. An occasional security guard would appear, but Valerie had become adept at avoiding them.

Surprise Inside
"Well, it looks like I'll be getting the chocolate cake," Skye said, looking at Grant over the menu, one perfectly sculpted eyebrow quirked. She didn't have a choice. There were only two dessert options: the cake or a caramel nut tart. It always seemed that the fancier the restaurant, the fewer choices. The Best Haunted House in Woodbridge
Owen hated working with teenagers. They were always late and playing on their cell phones. Absolutely no work ethic. But, they were cheap. Plus the yearly haunted house was a town tradition and no one wanted to work it besides the kids.

When the Woods Call your Name
Growing up in the country, Elijah knew better than to wander at night. Every evening, as dusk coated the sky he would check the old barn in the back and ensure the horses were safe, fed, and watered. On this particular evening, after he'd closed the barn door with a wooden thump, he heard a whinny from the forest surrounding their property. He was positive that all his family's horses were safe inside the barn, but it was possible that a horse had escaped from a neighboring farm. He knew better, but he felt confident that he could find the horse and return before his parents noticed anything amiss.

It's Only Temporary
Hope took a deep breath as she entered Quiescence. The building melded with the muted evening sky, a gentle blue gray. The inside was equally inoffensive, cool pastel walls and carpet. A receptionist sat behind a desk that appeared to be real mahogany and his crisp white button down had clearly been tailored. The artist in her could appreciate the way the windows focused the light on the plants scattered throughout the lobby.
