That was smooth
It was my first year in college and I was as equally nervous as I was excited. It was a fresh start and new way to reinvent myself from the person I was in high school. I didn't have many friends and I was heavily introverted. My parents were shocked when I told them that I would me majoring in Theatre. "So you'll be backstage helping with costumes?" they asked. "Well...no...I want to act." Mind you, I had never acted a day in my life because I was so shy. But it was somehow something that I was passionate about and decided to go for it. My first class was a theater and design class. We did the basic introduction of who we were and presented images that we liked. That class would be the beginning of many friendships...and a future relationship. But we'll get to that point soon.

Playlist to Soothe
I first want to start by saying that I don't typically make playlists. Thankfully I have the lovely Spotify to do that for me. If I were to make my own playlist it would be a mix of different genres and songs that do not go well together. Whenever I attempted to "DJ" my friends would either say "ooh what's this song? or "what the hell are we listening to?" So my dreams of being a DJ were crushed. So I just stick to liking songs and letting Spotify categorize songs for me. But once in a while I will find songs that I have to listen to back to back to put me in a mood. There are days where I have to reset my mind before work or when I get home to put myself back in a peaceful mindset. The following songs listed below always help me do that.

Dear Octavia
I met you at an audition you were holding for your short film Uneducated. What drew me to the project was the character breakdown and the synopsis of the film. A woman trying to navigate work and deal with the pressure from her mother to go back to school, while also trying to find love. I related with that character because I was going through that process myself. But another character featured was her friend Odessa or "Dee." Dee was an androgynous lesbian there to support her friend and encourage her to go to school. I auditioned for the role of Dee because I physically could play the part. I really wanted the main role of Angela but it was already cast. I didn't let that discourage me. I auditioned anyway and although I was not cast, it felt good being in the room with you.

Impulse Buy to save my skin
For the past few months I have been dealing with acne, specifically cystic acne. As a teen, I dealt with the typical issues of going through puberty. A few pimples and zits here and there. My brother had it worse and had to go through the process of trying different medications. I had my trial and error Proactive. It made it worse, but then made it better... I guess. So for a while my skin was smooth and people were complimenting me on how nice my skin was. I was still dealing with the insecurities of my acne scars from the constant pimple popping. So I never believed I had "good skin."

King Vader
Who is King Vader? Dominique Barrett, known to the world as King Vader is a social media influencer and Youtuber known for his unique style of parody videos. His content consists of videos that combine film, anime, and hip hop. King Vader has been around since the platform Vine...wow, remember Vine. I hadn't been into Vine because I didn't have the creative mindset to make "good" 8-second videos. But I love IG and whenever I see Vader on my feed, it makes my day.

Why are they great until they gotta be great?
Lizzo said it best. Why men great until they gotta be great? But I like to use they. Because lets face it, people suck with it comes to dating. We live in a world of instant gratification. Swipe left...swipe right. Order food, pay the extra $20 fees for UberEats. Watch a good Netflix show...and maybe "chill." But what happens after that. Maybe text the person the next day to say you had a good and should do it again...and never do it again. On the next. Swipe left...swipe right, and repeat the whole process again. This has been my experience for the past two years. Which brings me to Valentines day. I have been single for 2 years now and the idea of valentines day is giving me so many flashbacks of my relationship. During that relationship, I never had a decent valentines day date. Our valentines day dates ended up in an arguments, walking down the streets of Manhattan and riding silently on the subway. But other than that holiday, we were good. We enjoyed each others company, and went out cute regular dates. Movies, dinner, and a Broadway show here and there. But if our regular dates were so great, then why was Valentines day the worst day for us? Was it the pressure to express our love with materialistic values? We would give each other random gifts through out the year to show that we were thinking of each other. So the idea of trying to find a specific Valentine's day felt awkward. I know people say "Everyday should feel like Valentine's Day." It's corny but I somewhat agree. If I love my partner every day, then what difference does it make on Valentine's Day? I guess the same could be said about Anniversaries. But anniversaries are special because you are celebrating the day you decided to be together for the rest of your life. You care celebrating the love that you have for one another. What exactly is Valentine's day celebrating?

The Challenge
What do you do on a day off, or a good weekend? Probably pick a show to binge watch and order pizza or your go-to take out meal, and snack on everything in sight. Or at least, that’s what most people do. Especially during this time of a panorama, I mean pandemic. I really hate saying that word. A month from now, we would have been in this “pizzeria” for a year now.
