THE MERMAID LOVE

The sun beat down on the shores of Lake Kivu, shimmering on the vast expanse of water. Twelve-year-old Nkusi, a slender boy with eyes the color of the lake itself, sat on a weathered rock, his fishing line trailing lazily into the deep. He sighed, boredom settling over him like a heavy cloak. Fishing had yielded little, and the afternoon stretched before him, empty and monotonous.
