His arrival is greeted with silent indifference despite the winter breeze and stray snow flurries that accompany him through the revolving door. Compared to the bustling city streets on the other side of the serene, all-glass hotel facade, its lobby is one of the most peaceful spaces into which the man has ever stepped foot.

At the End of the Tracks
After a long and rather boring drive through the northern countryside, the sight of the village appearing seemingly out of nowhere nearly took my breath away. Every time and without fail, from as early as I could remember until well into adulthood, it was something to behold. Infinitesimal homes, barns, and brick-lad institutions dotted the valley floor below in random assortments that belied the village’s status as both paragon of rust belt victim and poster child for once-expert, perfect zoning.

Don’t Look
“Do you understand, Mr. Stevens?” Percy, three-piece suit and all, stared at me and lifted his nose as he spoke. It was as if he were attempting to sniff through the thick veil of deodorant I applied just moments before arriving at the hilltop mansion. His eyes wandered down my shabbily dressed frame, past my overnight bag held together with duct tape, and back up before he turned around and made his way down the opulent, wood-paneled hallway before us.

Listen To The Thunder With Me
She reaches the top of the ridge and is smacked in the face by the view through the barren trees: a vast expanse of devastation stretching from just below her all the way to the horizon. Countless skyscrapers replaced with haphazard piles of concrete, glass, steel, asphalt, brick, and shattered memory. Ruins of an evaporated civilization, the detritus of all earthly existence.
