The Mirror Guard (chapters 9 & 10)
Nine: Nine Days in the Stark EVA SAT ON BENJAMIN IN PEDESTALMODE. She was looking down at Mrs. Shimmyshanks’ cold body. Tears were freezing to her cheeks. She wasn’t sure if she could do this. If she could have her first time be with Ono, if she could then eat Mrs. Shimmyshanks, and then, who knew if she would even be able to shapeshift!? There was too much on her shoulders and she was sure that that was the reason she felt so sick to her stomach.

The Mirror Guard (chapter 8)
Eight: Eight Days in the Stark EVA COULDN’T SLEEP. She’d stayed up and made sure Eke finally fell asleep before slipping out of the tent into the frigid night cold. The snow had come and gone, leaving the clearest of night skies. The skylights danced overhead with the mood full and bright. The Divine Doctrine claims that’s where Rainiar la Jaguar’sister dances for all eternity.

Seven: Seven Days in the Stark EVA’S EYES SNAPPED OPEN! There was a wyrm tooth pressed into her throat. She felt the familiar grip of a sword in one of her hands — so she slashed. The snow wyrm screamed and opened its mouth. White light beamed inside. A slimy tongue moving towards her. She moved into a wobbly angerstance and quickly hacked at the tongue. When it was in two pieces, Eva tried to get balance in her feet to turn towards the light, towards out.

Six: Seven Days in the Stark EVA WAS IN A FIELD OF SNOW. Around her was a barrier of snow-covered trees. They rose into the sky, higher than any trees she’d ever seen. She didn’t feel cold, which she thought was weird, but as soon as she grasped the idea that it was unusual — she lost the concept. She looked around for the boys, Benjamin, or Mrs. Shimmyshanks’ body — but saw nothing but the trees and the snow.

The Mirror Guard (chapter 5)
Five: Seven Days in the Stark MRS. SHIMMYSHANKS LOOKED LIKE A SKELETON WITH SKIN STRETCHED OVER HER BONES. She laid draped over the unicorn’s back, clearly looking uncomfortable, but too sick to care. Eva couldn’t stand to look at her. She thought Eke felt similarly, as he charged ahead of them all, pressing through the knee-high snow. He moved with an angry determination that wasn’t going to spawn anything good. Eva knew this, but wasn’t sure how to comfort him. Nothing she could say would make this situation better. She held onto the false hope that getting to the bunker would get Mrs. Shimmyshanks the help that she needed. The faster the better.

Four: Four Days in the Stark “THERE IS NOTHING LEFT!” Eva shouted. They were sitting in a clearing. Nothing but white around them, far off to the south there was a cluster of pine trees. Eva was on her knees rooting through the two survival packs that they had. Mrs. Shimmyshanks was laying in the still erected tent. Every so often you’d hear her groan in pain. Her temperature was continuing to rise.

The Mirror Guard (chapter 3)
Three: One Day in the Stark THE STARK SEEMED TWENTY DEGREES COLDER THAN THE CITY. The snow was deep, which made traveling slow and taxing. The gusts came in waves, but when they came they were frigid. The Stark was nothing but snow and ice. Nothing grew out here except for a few short trees that had adapted to the harsh environment. Depending on the drifts, the trees were there, and then they were gone.

Two AFTER THIER PARENTS DIED, EVA TOOK CARE OF HER BROTHER AS HIS SOLE GUARDIAN. No one cared about a couple of scruffy kids that lived in the Coal District. Buildings here didn’t have the crystalline luster of the most other parts of Crystalis. Here, the buildings were crafted from cheap crystal parts and metal. From that top of the wall, the Coal District looked like a blight.

This is a story that I wrote for my expanded "Gardener Universe." It's one of my favorite short stories from a compelation that I had been making. I love it so much that it's easily going to be turned into a full novel, which this story will serve as the backbone. So enjoy.

The Slayji
THE DIVE BAR WAS DARK AND FULL OF ENERGETIC PEOPLE. The man sat with his funny hat in the back corner, the table furthest from everyone else. The hat was wide-brimmed and came to a point at the end of its floppy cone on top. It was properly called an alicorn. And it properly did not make him inconspicuous, <Stupid hat!> People were looking, staring, but they all seemed to keep their distance. He knew they were whispering about him. They always did, no matter where he went. Slayji couldn’t go anywhere without being watched, both in wonderment and in weariness. They were employed to hunt the monsters — though it was hard to get them to believe they weren’t also monsters.
