A Secret Place
The clocks in the old Sutton Manor had a certain musicality. One deep toned in its clanging on the hour, like a rotund, bass voiced man, the smaller, gilt, glass enclosed one,a tinnier sound, like tiny needles poked in your ear lobes although not entirely that unpleasant.

The Book Healer
Sweet, savory, fine leather.....not the kind for bondage, but for books. I developed my book bondage, happily enslaved, at the age of ten. I was at a yard sale and saw them with their gilt, floral decorations gleaming in the sunlight, like a beacon from heaven calling to me.

Grandpa Jake’s Secret Stash
Grandpa Jake was a man of few words. The ones you sometimes heard being things like, “ turnipheads” , when referring to government officials, “ummm” when eating a hot apple pie ala mode or “crymenintly!”, a made up oath we heard when a finger was smashed, a pig got loose, or a piece of machinery he was fixing gave him trouble. This could also be uttered in excitement or awe, like when I won the spelling bee! Crymenintly, baby girl! You are the Queen speller!”
