Shadows of the Lithilium
“No. There is no way.” I am so shocked that I actually say the words out loud. No one in the room seems to notice my presence, and my voice doesn’t draw any attention either. The figure in the center of the crater, lying prone in scorched and shredded clothing, is Bloquan.

Shadows of the Lithilium
The book in Durgin’s hands has the odor of dirt, age, and death about it. The unknown script on the cover glows faintly silver in the moonlight. The pages rustle like a dull breeze on a hot day through dry grass as he places the book upon a table next to the shelf. I shift as quietly as I can, focusing all of my enhanced senses toward the tome resting ominously in front of the megalomaniacal mage.

Shadows of the Lithilium
“Thank you Tealith.” Arath’s voice is soft, and I can feel the emotions coming off of him in waves. Relief, anger, and most strongly his love for Tealith. His emotions are so strong in that moment that I wonder if Tealith might even notice them. She doesn’t look likely to notice anything however as her gaze is directed at the floor and she seems to still be wondering whether she’s made the right choice.

Shadows of the Lithilium
I wake early the next morning, My whole body feeling more energized than it has for days. I roll over and push myself up to my feet. The sun is just barely coming up over the horizon and most of the landscape is still bathed in grey predawn light. I look down at Frengton and am surprised by the lack of light coming from the town. Most cities like this kept watch fires burning through the night so that the guards keeping watch could see what is going on, at least that had been my experience in the past.

Shadows of the Lithilium
Frengton had always had an unsavory reputation, known to be the home of more than one rouge and outlaw trying to evade the grasp of justice even before the Lithilium came out of hiding and started systematically disabling human governments. Frengton had been one of the first regimes to fall, though no one was really sure why it was targeted since it wasn't really a hot bed of political power. With the loss of centralized leadership to enforce and make laws all kinds of petty slum lords rose up to take their place. Within a few weeks it became risky to even walk around the town without some kind of protection. There were muggings, kidnappings, and every other kind of unspeakably evil acts that you could imagine. In fact, if Tealith's business in the town wasn't so important she would have never come within a hundred miles of the place.

Shadows of the Lithilium
The morning brings less pain than the last time I awoke, but that's little comfort since I am still exhausted. The splinter and knife wounds on my arms are healed, but my shoulder is still quite painful and my arms and face itch like there are ants crawling all over them, the result of the healing flesh. All of that, together with my nightmares, meant that I got very little sleep and I am not excited to have to do more walking today.

Chapter 5
As I gradually become aware of bright light bleeding through my eyelids and the sound of birds chirping around me, I can almost imagine that everything I went through among the humans was just a bad dream. Then the pain starts and I'm forced to accept the reality that my life has become.

Chapter 4
I wake to the sound of footsteps coming down the hall. I stretch slowly, relaxed and rested for the first time since I had been captured in the forest. I walk to the door of my prison and wait to see who's coming. After a few more seconds the same two guards who had escorted me earlier come into view.

Chapter 3
"How do we stop them?" The eagerness in Tealith's voice is obvious and I feel a twinge of guilt, even though I had expected the question. I might have decided to switch sides, but that didn't mean I was about to help them massacre my entire, well, what ever we are.

Shadows of the Lithium
I roll on to my side as I hear what sounds like a door at the end of the hall being opened. I'd spent most of the night listening to a barrage of insults and invective that my guards had used to try to provoke me in to giving them a reason to use their spears on me. Occasionally they would search around the floor until they found a stone that they could throw at me. They never did manage to hit me thanks to my quick reflexes, but it was still annoying.

Shadows of the Lithium
It's been two-hundred years since that day in the woods. I managed to survive, hiding in the forests and mountains, trying not to be found. For a while I did try to blend in among the humans; I died my hair black with soot and posed as a blind beggar with a cloth tied around my eyes. My other senses are acute enough that I never had to actually worry about where I was going or who was around me, and it felt good to be among people again. At least for as long as it lasted. Eventually they always discovered my secret and I would be forced to flee for my life. Eventually, about fifteen years ago, I found a group of Lithilium being led by a man named Bloquan.

Shadows of the Lithium
I open my eyes, and am nearly blinded by the sun. Has it always been this bright? I can't seem to remember. In fact, I can't seem to remember much of anything. Wary of opening my eyes again I I focus instead on my other senses. Immediately I am almost overwhelmed by the cacophony of scents and sounds assaulting me.
