A coffee shop in San Fransisco, November, 2022 Her hair used to be a tumble of modest brown, but years of insistent sun had dug into her roots and found hints of red. Hunter had never noticed that before. That day, as they say together in a coffee shop in San Fransisco, it curled like drying honey, sticking together in wild, unbrushed tangles that touched the loose waistband of her cargo shorts.

I can’t move. I thought, my back pressed firmly to the hospital bed beneath it. I could see the room around me, the standard and dingy holding space in the behavioral health facility.

A Phantom Aftertaste
July, 2033 I raked my eyes monotonously over the newspaper next to the coffee shop’s counter, trying my best to avoid eye contact with the barista. It was a part of my routine, to seem interested in the news while the old Mexican man messed up my order. As my attention begged to move on to a quick scroll through my phone, the blank, staring face on the front page distracted me. The black and yellowed-white of the print made his blackheads stand out, pinpoints to connect, each one a dot from my past calling out to me.
