“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Two empires past, it was an ugly, fearful place. The Valley of Wails was the gentlest name by which it was known. It was settled in centuries past by a war-weary people, who coveted the protection of the surrounding mountains. But then foulness came, and those same mountains now protected the outside world from the evils within. Men and women of the valley lived in terror, secreted in holes and caves, while the vilest of the earth’s children scuttled and slithered and crawled across the open land.”

80s Horror: A Soundtrack
After taking a back seat in the 1950s and 60s, the horror genre began to build momentum again in the 70s and outright exploded in the 1980s. This new generation of splatterpunks eschewed the trappings of yesterdecade’s gothic fantasies in favor of more visceral, modern terrors. The filmmakers were young and reckless, the actors were young and desperate, and the audiences were young and bloodthirsty. As such, it was inevitable that the music would take on a hipper, fresher sound.

Old Timey Halloween
You stand in the corner, red solo cup in hand. On one side of the crowded room is Chris in his typical, phoned-in costume: this year a phallic baseball cap and a name badge that reads “Dickhead.” On the other side of the room, Eddie stands awkwardly, having outdone himself with his Lorde of Darkness costume, a masterpiece of prosthetics and layered armor that seems to have rendered him incapable of moving. Perusing the females in attendance, you think you’ve seen every “sexy” costume there is until Debra walks in dressed as a cleavagy avocado.

If one had never spent time near a frozen lake, they’d be astonished by the cornucopia of sounds that emanated from such a body. People called it singing: the trills, chirps, and pings that resounded across the ice. Every tiny crack and minute shift was a note in an exotic chorus that was not to be heard anywhere else.

Fugitive
The autumn season had been astoundingly cold, and by mid-December the Miskatonic River that bisected Arkham had frozen. A hop, skip, and a jump across the ice from the north bank sat a small island dotted with standing stones. Jessie had been enchanted by the island ever since arriving in Arkham back in late September, and now that it was so easily accessible, she decided to pay it a visit. She thought of the winters she spent as a young girl at her grandmother’s lakeside home in New Jersey, where she would venture out onto the ice to play her violin. Now, away at college and feeling homesick, Jessie had an urge to resume the tradition that had passed away along with her grandmother.
