The Wish
I was bored. School was out, and there was nothing to do in this freaking dull town. Mom and Dad and the rest of the old people can blather all they like about The Way Things Used to Be. Stubborn old farts, mouthing the exact same things their parents used to say. Blah blah thrilling blah blah battles all along the road, blah blah British soldiers and Hessians. So exciting! So invigorating! Such handsome soldiers!

The Lottery Revisited
I could tell from across the square that my poor girlfriend got The Question again. I could almost read her lips, since she's just about patented the response as a tour guide to this little village that everyone wishes time had forgotten. “Yes, apparently it is a true story, you can visit the graveyard and see the line of head stones for the sacrificed victims. Once Mrs. Jackson wrote the short story – and yes, I am a direct descendent, and carry the family name – and the world was made aware of the goings-on, the lottery was modified. What was held yearly became every five years, then ten, and then faded out about the time the newfangled paved roads came to town. The black box is still on display at the town hall, which we will get to later. There are still papers inside, but no one will open it to find out. Hopefully it will be sealed in its hard plastic coffin till world's end.”

Day 4 - Compass Shift
I had been meaning to get to Saratoga National Park for a good while now. There are places you should go to understand why this country is the way it is. What those places are, of course, will differ wildly, depending on whom you're talking to. And your travel budget. And your ethnicity, unfortunately.

Day 3 - Finger Lake Frolic
This is the day where the geographical features sneak up on me. I'm just not used to huge lakes running north to south, tucked in between small mountains. Lots of farmland, and Amish enclaves, but definitely not like home. The trees, the soil, the landscape, it's just so different.

Day 1 - A New Adventure
[Intrepid explorer's note: These scribblings of a mad diarist are my impressions. They may or may not depict reality, and you can probably guess which one they tend to lean towards. I wax frothy, wax sarcastic, wax outrageous, wax poetic, wax enthusiastic, and wax neurotic. I hope you enjoy candles, because there will be a lot of waxing in these electronic pages. With that said, read on, if you dare...]
