Dhyāna: The Importance of Meditation
Yoga and meditation have been a prominent influence in my life for as long as I can remember. When my sister and I were growing up together, my mother would take time out of our day to get us to meditate and do yoga with her. This would not come easy with little girls who loved to play pretend. The child that I was had more interest in faster movement, such as dance, but my mother’s words always stuck with me. I wasn’t the most obedient child. Nevertheless, I was much easier to handle than many kids, for my mother listens to my emotions while giving space to encourage discipline. Meditating was a way for me to clear my thoughts and create a sense of calm that was typically hard to find in a child experiencing life for the first time. Along with my mother, my interest in meditation took flight from growing up watching Avatar: The Last Airbender expedited my desire to understand meditation outside of daily practice. When my interest for yoga and meditation took hold, my mother took notice and enrolled me in martial arts courses so that I could practice more discipline and calm energy. My mind was an empty glass being filled with various new perspectives.

Summer Meets Autumn
Their first encounter was as warm as mid-spring. The interactions were soft, unsure and cordial: they simply wanted to get to know each other. They'd meet only in groups, both unaware of the ticklish sensations their bodies experienced that were caused by the presence of each other. Her cheeks flushed red like flowers every time he held her eye contact. His loving eyes made her forget the cold air from the morning dew. Endless conversations would occur under the night sky about the moon and stars and everything in between. Verbenas bloomed brilliantly the night of their first kiss, alone at last. They once met as younglings, unknowing of the future they'll have together, but their connection was tied with a red string as soon as they locked eyes. Their romance took flight at the ripe age of 20, both still felt like children despite how time has passed.

The Unseen Pain at Venice Beach
The hour strikes 1am. The aroma of tacos al pastor fills the starless night sky of Venice Beach. What’s left of the restaurants still open begin to finally close with the preparations for the morning flow, however one truck stays open with trinkets of small lights humbly shining out for potential customers. The few passersby that remain are adolescents drinking their worries away. Yolanda looks out the window of her truck and hears rolling waves in the distance now that the flow of traffic has slowed. The dazzling street lights pollute the midnight sky enough for Yolanda to catch a glimpse of the dark and illusive beach.
