Fallen Wings
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Dragons are creatures of light and sky, and this sunken landscape extinguishes the brightest flames no matter how fervently they fight to flicker and fly for the heavens. This is a place of shadow and secrets, a mecca for every formed and formless individual who no longer has anything to lose but the whisper of spirit that remains twisted and tattered within their core. Only those who have no other option come to this place to wither away, and these mighty beings are no exception. There are thousands of them in the valley now, and as each day passes the heavy wind beneath their wings drags them down further, until they can no longer leave the barren ground at all. More will come. As the last of them are hunted and driven from their homes, those who survive will make their way here,

It was a Thursday morning in the middle of a golden September, and David Ramirez was heading to the Student Union Building to grab a quick lunch before his next lecture. On his way there he was flagged down by a familiar girl who was blessed by the gods with sumptuous curves and a megawatt grin.... Bry. “David, hey!” she waved and made her way towards him. David smiled back and finished closing the distance between the two of them “Hey Bry, good to see you!”

The Writing On the Walls
March 18th 2021 Today has been one Anna doesn’t much care to remember, though that seems to be the running theme of her life these last few months. As a 34 year old woman in the midst of a hellish divorce she feels all at once too old to escape her relationship with the freedom found joie de vivre she may have once been able to muster, and too young to clutch to any sparkling shard of wisdom that might be collected in the chaotic endings of ill spent love. As a result she feels quite earnestly that she has come out of a decade long journey with nothing but ugly bitterness in her heart. Just as she allows herself to dwell upon this condition however, a small photograph slips from the book she has absentmindedly lifted from a box of mementos she is rifling through ( her attempt to fulfill the human need for nostalgic comfort that is often felt in turbulent times). She looks first at the book-a small turquoise bound journal with a silver dolphin leaping in the centre of the cover, gracefully arching over her similarly metallic name- and then at the photograph staring face up at her from the floor. Her mouth parts slightly and her eyes widen in a moment of powerful recollection. She picks the small photograph up, delicately tracing the sharp lines and angles contained within its borders, and she is pulled back in time.

Just a Woman
My heart is still clamoring hard against my ribs, but the rhythm has begun to settle a little. I no longer feel as if it is attempting to claw and pry it’s way out to escape it’s bony prison. I allow myself to acknowledge that I have found a temporary reprieve in this darkened, old barn that I stumbled into. My heartbeat settles further still, but it maintains an insistent rhythm- a nervous thrum of trepidation for what the future may hold.

Tipping the Scale
The cool, solid sensation is reassuring as it rests upon my breast bone. It’s weight mirrors the heavy burden that settled into my heart almost 2 years ago, the day everything changed. Now, every heart beat feels as if it is pumping lead into my veins, dragging me down deeper and deeper.
