REVIEW - Not Refugees: Ukrainians in Canadian Legal Limbo (Directed by Serge Velbovets)
Opening in a very dramatic style more akin to an action-thriller, this is a hard-hitting and serious documentary which aims to get the viewer's attention immediately. The style used to open the film is extremely effective, and may lead some to question whether they're about to watch a 'true' documentary or something more closely resembing an action thriller movie - however, after the opening, the film reverts to a more traditional documentary/docudrama presentation.

With a run time of just over 13 minutes, Silent Plan (Sezziz Plan in Turkish) directed by Ömer Yildirim (Kiraz Mevsimi, Sir-Ayet 2, Shame, Sevda Kusun Kanadinda) is a creative short film with a thought-provoking twist at its climax.

REVIEW - Anopheles (Directed by Will Agee)
The documentary movie genre is typically considered to be represented by works which are factual, informative and educational; these are all fundamental requisites, and yet most of us do not normally associate documentaries with exceptional visual beauty - however, Anopheles directed by Will Agee (Crescite, Noori, Guerrera, The Land of High Mountains) and produced by Cam Goggins (Noori, Guerrera) not only tells an intricate, complicated and serious story extremely well, but it truly does so with striking cinematic splendor.

REVIEW - Staten Island Ghost Story (Directed by Vincent J. Mazella)
From the off, before even sitting down to watch this movie, the poster alerted me to the possibility that I was about to watch something outlandish, ridiculous or even farcical - and on this occasion my instincts were not wrong - for as soon as I hit the play button I was treated to a bizarre opening with jarring music, bad rapping, an ill-fitting wig, and over the top theatrics - quite an assault of the senses even before the title sequence!

The 'Royal game' or 'mind sport' known as 'Chess' has become a classic plot device for movies ever since Ingmar Bergman's 1957 classic The Seventh Seal, and has featured prominently in numerous flicks ever since, including From Russia with Love, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, X-Men, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows to name but a few - and now there is a new movie to join their ranks.
