In the night

In the pitch black of the night I was walking through the park when I thought I heard the screams of a little girl. These weren’t just any screams, but ear-piercing screams. The kind that stop you in your tracks and look around to see where it is coming from. I tried to look through the darkness to no avail. I couldn’t see anything. I kept walking and soon heard them again. This time there was someone else past when I reached the streetlight, but they didn’t look phased by the noise. Was this common here? Was I imaging things?
