The Struggle for Civil Rights, 1930–1959 Many African Americans emerged from World War II intent on rejecting second-class citizenship once and for all. The Civil Rights Movement took shape in the years that followed. The military was desegregated. Freedom rides, bus boycotts, and strikes challenged Jim Crow laws. In North Carolina, a Senate campaign turned ugly over the issue of race, and in Robeson County, the Lumbee challenged the Ku Klux Klan — and won. In this chapter we’ll examine the origins of the Civil Rights Movement and analyze the reasons for its early successes and failures.

1900 Work On New York Subway Begins , Work on the New York subway begins on the first section from City Hall to the Bronx in the year 1900. It was financed by the issue of rapid transit bonds by the City of New York and because no company was willing to take the risk of such a large project. The city decided to build the subways itself by subcontracting with the IRT who ran the elevated railways in the city to equip and operate the subways, sharing the profits with the City and guaranteeing a fixed five-cent fare.

What is psychology? When strangers ask you what you do, if you say you're a psychologist you tend to get one of two reactions. Either they say, 'are you going to read my mind?’, or they regard you as the kind of personal life-coach whose outputs fill airport bookstores. These responses capture a grain of truth, in that psychologists are interested in how the mind works, and some of them use that knowledge to devise therapeutic solutions to common mental health problems. But there is a big difference between academic psychologists and the kinds of 'experts’ whose tomes tell you how to live your life: we treat the study of the human mind as worthy of scholarly investigation, typically adopting experimental and observational methods to resolve questions of interest.

What is film studies? The earliest serious writings on film and cinema began to appear soon after medium's birth, and the 1920s saw the publication of the first historical accounts of cinema and the launch of some critical journals. By the end of the 1930s, the idea of including film appreciation in school curricula had been put into practice in the UK, the US, and elsewhere. This venture was prompted by a variety of sometimes contradictory motives, including a social reform agenda originating from a desire to mitigate the supposedly harmful influence of films on children, and a cultural appreciation approach which aimed to foster informed responses to films. A key objective of introducing popular media like film into the classroom was to educate children’s responses to the sounds and images that were part of their everyday lives; to teach them to discriminate, in other words.
