The Mirror
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It was Cyrus, the youngest of the group, who noticed it first. “Look, Mommy,” he said to Melissa, pointing through the gap in the woods to the cabin in the distance. Melissa turned white as a ghost as she saw the faint distant light, and her heart raced as she pondered what this could mean.

The Engineer
Joseph Laroche had always loved math, and he was always good at it. He was patient and steady and didn’t give up easily on solving a problem. He was a quiet and studious boy. Growing up in Haiti, his mother told him from the time he was young that he was going to study hard and get a good education, and when he was old enough, he would go abroad and study in France. Joseph’s uncle, Cincinnatus Leconte, was the president of Haiti, so Joseph’s parents had always held him to a high standard, and reminded him that he would always have to carry himself in a way that represented his family well. Joseph’s parents sent him abroad to study in France when he was 15 years old. They wanted him to get the best education possible and thought he would be more successful in France than in Haiti, so off he went at 15, leaving his home and family behind.

I love a good antihero. If the success of shows like "Breaking Bad" is any indication, I'm not alone. We love to cheer on a flawed character. We find ourselves rooting for characters like Walter White, whose actions progress from illegal to downright immoral and evil, at times. We can empathize with a villain's backstory, and understand how they became who they are.

The Lighthouse
Timothee Roberts occupied an empty home, but a cluttered mind. The lighthouse stood alone, surrounded only by the sounds of waves crashing against the rocky shore, and the hiss of the tea kettle that warmed Timothee’s body once a day at the precise time that a single beam of light shone through the smallest window at the top of the wall. The tea never seemed to last more than even a sip. He finished it in one gulp, but even the one swallow was enough to put his mind at ease and silence the constant chaos within him. Being alone wasn’t something Timothee had chosen, but it was something he had grown used to.
