Hood Ornaments
They woke in the morning with their bodies entwined and the sheets woven within any bit of negative space. Michael was the first to wake. His eyes opening to see Tori breathing softly into his collarbone. The vision caused his whole face to beam. He stared at her for what seemed like hours, but in reality it was only a few seconds. Very gently he leaned to kiss her on her eyelids. She smiled but did not open her eyes. Michael took that as a sign to pull her even closer to him. Tori nuzzled deeper into the nook and relaxed.

After they all said their goodbyes to Ladee, who remarkably managed to stay out of earshot, the quartet decided on a less fancy restaurant to dine in because of the attire of the artists. But when Tori looked at the prices on the menu, her facial expression was one of shock. Michael patted her knee under the table and tilted her head to whisper in her ear.

There was a soft knock on her dorm room door. Tori glanced at herself in the mirror one last time. She twisted the knob to let the door ease open. Michael walked in wearing torn jeans, a dress shirt, a brown blazer and a tan crocheted hat. He topped off the ensemble with a bright orange tie with a skull and cross bones on it. Tori would have been lying if she said she wasn’t disappointed when she arrived at the studio and Michael wasn’t there. All the same, she had a lot of work to do. Her semester character painting was only half complete because she was struggling with the hues of the jazz musician’s skin. She walked around the easel a few times then started biting on her thumb as she squatted in front of it. Tori then sucked her teeth and glided to the other side of the studio where her other easel was. This was an abstract, and she could easily finish this before her time was up. She was so involved in her painting she didn’t hear Michael come in, and she jumped at the sound of his voice.

The concrete seemed to glimmer in the sun, Tori was reminded of home. The way the streets were beaten by the elements cracking under winter’s pressure made potholes everywhere. It was also odd because of the glimmering specks in the street Tori once thought were jewels, she now realized they were fragments of glass.

The first day of any school year was always nerve racking. The first day of class at college was doubly so. The first day of class at a new college in a strange city where you have only met two people--was creepy. Tori did what she could to make it through. Before she left home she printed out the map of the campus, circled the buildings where her classes were along with the times and room numbers.

When Dell pulled into the driveway with the van, Tori rolled her eyes and wondered if he was going to rent a new vehicle every time they went somewhere. She pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and rolled her eyes again. Tony had not texted her.
