The Solar System Overview of the Solar System The Solar System is made up of the Sun, eight planets, four dwarf planets, and countless moons, asteroids, comets, and other pieces of cosmic debris that circle the Sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are all rocky planets with rough surfaces. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are all gas giants with no solid surfaces. Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, and Makemake have orbits that extend well beyond Neptune.
