Violets in bloom
Anthony Lévesque had gown up in the small town of Silver Lake. He loved that the great outdoors were only a few steps away. As a child, he had loved going fishing and swimming in one of the small bays of Silver Lake. He loved playing in the woods with his friends and having campfires on the beach with his family.

The last Marigold of the summer
Violet hadn’t been back in Silver Lake since she had graduated from university. She had moved to Montreal for work and hadn’t looked back, until now. Violet took a deep breath of the fresh mountain air that smelled of pine. It brought back so many memories at once, but also a sadness that always seemed to surround the memories of her childhood. Violet had lost her mother when she was only 7 years old and her father had passed when she was starting high school. Her sister, Marigold, who was five years older, then became her guardian until Vi turned 18. Even through all the trials of her young life, she still kept some treasured memories of her childhood. She was also still very close to her sister, talking to her on the phone every day.

Random acts of kindness
Jodie had lived in Silver Lake her entire life. She loved this sleepy little town, nestled in the hills of the Canadian Shield. The town had been built by the pioneers, lumberjacks mostly, who had left traces of their handiwork in some of the century’s old wooden houses that were dotted around Silver Lake. The town encircled a large lake by the same name, with many bays connected to smaller lakes by meandering creeks. The lake was dotted with many islands, some of which were inhabited, but only in the summer, acting as small fishing cottages that could be rented out.

A Slice of Heaven in the Mediterranean
Arianna was embarking on the journey of a lifetime. She was travelling to Rome, alone. It’s not what she had intended. Her best friend Chiara was supposed to be there, sitting beside her in the airplane, but something came up, or rather someone by the name of Nathan. She couldn’t be mad at her friend for wanting to use her travel money for her honeymoon later in the year. Arianna would have to make the best of it on her own. It would be her own Roman Holiday.

One Brushstroke at a Time
The past two years have been a crazy roller coaster ride, with the train derailing while I was still inside it. From going on strike, to having to tell my students that our class trip was cancelled, to having to do online learning through a pandemic, my life has been forever changed. Add to that the big D. No, not that one! Get your mind out of the gutter! I mean the mental health D, the one that no one wants to talk about and tries to avoid like the plague, or COVID in our case. Yes, I’m talking about depression. I went from being a stressed out teacher, trying to juggle one too many things at the same time, to being forced to stop working because of a burn out. I didn’t know what to do with myself in those first two weeks. All I kept thinking was how guilty I felt for my students that I had left behind. Unfortunately, the guilt, the stress and the pandemic would lead my mind to the darkest of places; a place that my doctor eventually called depression.
