Chapter 1: The Broken Soldier. Top Story - November 2023.
The forest path was uneven. He felt every rise and divot in the earth, every loose stone that twisted under his boot. With every step, his leg complained with a bright pinch of pain as if to remind him that he was - in fact - broken. He couldn’t decide which was worse, the walk to the cabin that he was now forced to call home, or the wagon ride through Wolf’s Pass; a jostling, hellish ordeal over the border that made him question his sanity. At least in the wagon he still had his brothers with him.

It was a hot, humid night in late July, and a monsoon was rolling in. There were less than ten of us, sweating around a fire, silent in a way I had never experienced with these people before. There were veterans, active military, kids who were poised to join. And a precious few were like me, patriots who were allowed, for a few moments, to look deeper into the lives of those who dedicated themselves to their country.

How the Stars Came to Be
Gather, children, gather, and I will tell you the story of the stars. When the world was young, my children - when chickens had teeth and coyotes shared the language of our people - the night was as dark as obsidian arrows, as thick and black as the hair in your braids. Only the moon shone in the darkness, laboring alone to keep the night-creatures at bay.
