Be a Person not Human
I have a hard time with the fact that people today are still discriminated against in any way. I grew up in a small town where there were only five hundred kids in a school that went from kindergarten to grade twelve. We did not have our first person of color join our school until I was in grade six or seven. I think he felt that he was singled out because of his color and I suppose in reality he was, but we did not treat him differently than anyone else. We had never learned to hate based on race. Whether because we had no one in our town of color before and had so many questions based on everything we heard on the news and from other people in the big city, or because it was a new kid in school, and we never got a lot of them, all the kids wanted to his friend, and he was probably more popular than he had ever been in his life. As time went on he never got in any more trouble than any of the other children and in fact against everything the media tended to guide people towards believing, his whole family became a big part of the community and tried to do good for everyone around them. There are good and bad people in every culture, and in every country, town or city the fact is people need to stop judging based on skin and pay more attention to the actions of people.

The Things Once Lost
As she stares out the window the grey that seems to have a hold on the whole world starts to consume her. Spring is around the corner and her mind wanders to what she can do to pass the time until the sun is finally shining. The thoughts of frolicking in the sun wearing short shorts and bathing suit tops are a much happier place in her mind than the dreary, heavy grey surrounding her out the window. She has no idea how much time has passed as she shakes the happy place in her mind away and the view outside gives no indication except that it is still light out, so it has to at least still be early afternoon. So, she sips on the coffee she forgot she was holding and although it is barely warm it brings a smile to her face, and she decides to go for walk. Not being able to work has found her in some pretty dark places especially since this winter has seemed colder and to drag on for an excessive amount of time. That is probably because she has not been able to do much, the pain that has consumed for years has finally taken its toll and even the simplest tasks have become excruciating. Walking helps her keep active and is a great way to experience nature and think about other ways to pass the time and stay as healthy as possible.

Cure for the Sore Throat
Everyone has experienced a sore throat in one way or another. Whether you went out the night before to a concert and screamed for hours or caught the common cold the discomfort can be frustrating. There is so many different remedies out there from the common lozenge to cold medicines, but they usually taste horrible. Who wants to take something that tastes like the devil peed and put it into a case of death that burns to get you better? I definitely do not enjoy that, so then you start looking for other options, but unless you get the medicine that tastes bad most of the ones that do not make you want to puke are ineffective. Then you try to move to more of the home remedies, I can give all sorts of reasons to not want a hot totty even though that was always grandma's go to, but the hot totty remains a favorite for many for colds and flus. I am allergic to alcohol and to make this drink effective alcohol is the main ingredient, this also can take away the use for children unless the alcohol is removed then not only do you have something that tastes bad it does not even give them the buzz which in general is the whole reason it is effective, you forget you are sick. Then we have hot chocolate, this is a good go to however very temporary. The warmth and thickness are both soothing for the throat but only fully effective while actually drinking it. Tea with honey will always be one of the most effective. Honey is a natural healer and tea has many healing traits as well so not only does this taste good all the natural healing power should see you feeling better in no time. With all the different methods to cure sore throats, an original one has all but been forgotten. I do not know if this is because it is most likely the least healthy option or just that it was changed and marketed as junk food but I must say I can not say enough about how this secret made a horrible week a little better.

The Kindness of Strangers
As with a lot of good stories, they can either begin with or end with heart break, this one begins with it. I had thought I found the love of my life, we met online on an app through mutual friends off a broadcasting app. When ever we get tired of entertaining or need to get back to life but want to have company to do whatever life chore we are going to accomplish we switch to a group app so we can come and go as we need to and can speak freely without worry of offending our audience. The guy was from Portland, Oregon, even though it is only 16 hours away from where I live in Canada I had never been down there, and it was somewhere I had wanted to visit for numerous reasons. I had been planning a trip to Texas, but it had fallen through so I was looking for somewhere to go. I have friends from the app who were wanting to meet me for quite some time so I planned a route that would see me through Idaho, Washington state and Oregon before coming home the long way through British Columbia. We had been friends for 6 months leading up to me planning this trip and there was not really any flirting or talk about relationships other than the odd discussion about what we looked for in them but being from different countries it did not cross our minds that we would find ourselves drawn to each other aside from the friendship we had developed. When I told him about my plan and route, I wanted to take he told me he would love to show me around the Portland area and that he had no problems with me staying at his place while I was down there so away, I went. From that first visit he had my heart in a way I never thought possible and we came up with every way to spend time together as much as possible with the border in our way. For the better part of year, I spent my time down there with him, went back and forth every month for a week or two at a time until September when I started school and was going to spend six months with him to help him stay motivated to get his bills caught up and get his passport so he could come to Canada with me and make it easier to be together without being able to move to either country for the time being. It was three months in that everything changed and where I truly learned about the kindness of strangers. Being from another Country I was not aloud to work without permission and a visa, and with Trump being in office most places had stopped trying to hire out of country because it was nearly impossible to get approval plus it is an expensive process that is the responsibility of the company to pay if they are hiring immigrants. I was doing my best to do chores and house keeping to make a few dollars to help how ever I could, make sure I had gas in my car and food to eat while we were trying to get his life in order with his money. My car was not running properly so I was trying to save to get it fixed for when I had to head home, and I was doing some cash night work putting inserts into newspapers. It was doing this that I met the first person that went out of their way to help me. One week after I met this lady, we will call her Dina, is when my world came crashing down and I was left with no where to go, no money and my car not running well enough to get me home. It was the middle of the night and he thought I was sleeping, I was laying quietly watching him play a game on his phone and when I seen what he said to a girl he was talking to my heart broke and I walked out the door, never to look back.

Beating the winter blues
Three years ago I started a journey of self discovery. Everything in my life had changed and it was time to rediscover myself and make plans for my future. Living in Canada my whole life I had decided first off that I never wanted to spend another full winter here. Travel has always been my passion, everything about my being is pulled by the insatiable need to see the world, learn about other cultures, see the amazing architecture in other countries and being able explore far off lands. Knowledge that other parts of the world do not have cold winters and have opposite seasons to us instantly peaked my interest and from learning that at a young age it has been a goal to not have to spend winter in the frozen white north. Having your hair turn into an icicle and break off when you touch it outside because you get out of the shower late and have to run out the door without being able to blow dry it is not motivation to stay where you are for the rest of your life, at least not for me. I was finally given the opportunity to experience warmer winter weather after 38 years on this planet and although it was not somewhere as balmy as Brazil it was still a big change from what I experienced my whole life. Now do not laugh too hard at this, for some, where I went may not give the same euphoric feeling as it did for me and in fact they still have colder winters than most of the United States but for me it just reinforced my need to leave Canada during our winter months. So where did I go you ask, I went to Portland, Oregon. 36 was the average temperature while I was there, it rained a lot, it was grey most days even when it didn't rain but man did I love it. An inch of snow shut down the whole city for a day and it was melted before it even hit the ground. The grass was green, the first time I ever seen people mow lawn in the winter, let alone when it was raining, but they would have forests for lawns if they didn't mow on the days when the rain was just a mist. The trees that bloom for a short time over the winter with the beautiful pink flowers, they bloom and die over a period of a few weeks and in the areas that have lots the ground is turned pink by the pedals it's absolutely breath taking. Now like I said it was not Brazil by any means, and I know that even if I went one state south I could of had palm trees and 70 degree weather but in comparison from where I live in Alberta, this was heaven. It continued my drive to get my education completed, to work on being able to make a habit of traveling over the winter months and be paid for it and I started a quest for different ways to make this goal, my dream, become my reality. After one winter and completing what I needed to get a start in the travel industry moving forward, low and behold the world said hold my beer lets give her one more hurdle, a pandemic. Of course this didn't just affect my life and what I have worked so hard to accomplish this has negatively affected most of the world. From people having their lives turned upside down from the lingering effects of getting the illness, or losing loved ones to it, it literally stopped my dream career and all I had accomplished in its' tracks and once again I was trying to put my life on track without being able to work in my chosen career. This also meant that I was going to have to endure another brutally cold Canadian winter. I am not even aloud to travel within Canada to places that are warmer than where I am, at least if I don't want to chance being in trouble and getting a fine. So now we reach the part where I make everything above fit into the title of my piece, how to beat the winter blues.

Travelling during covid
I have always been an avid traveller, for many reasons I have stayed in North America even leading into this year of covid but this is the first year I have been stuck in my Country. I have to say in the month that I have been able to hit the road I have discovered so many beautiful trails, small town markets and local spots that I have passed by every day but never had the time to appreciate their value.
