Sabbath rest. Who knew?
In the summer of 2021, Israel slightly loosened their tight Covid restrictions and allowed for certain groups of tourists to visit. As one whose blood shares in the ancestry of the Israeli people, my friend and I were in one of those lucky groups.

Mantis and Lamb
This is the story of the lamb and the praying mantis. Once upon a time, in a beautiful meadow with a barn, lived baby Lamb. Bordering this beautiful meadow was the dark forest where baby Mantis lived. One day while skipping in the thick grass of the breezy meadow, baby Mantis met baby Lamb eating. At first, Lamb was scared because of Mantis’ small but growing claws. Mantis assured him that his claws were totally harmless and the two began a blooming friendship.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Add Sugar
The Inception It was the summer of 2019. I was working as a summer school one-on-one instructional aide for the most unique kid, Dean. He had a deep love and uncanny knowledge of trains. He could memorize and recite entire movie scenes. That summer, he was obsessed with the famous “fish are friends, not food” scene from Finding Nemo. And nature seemed to respond to him differently, like they knew he wasn’t a threat. Dean was on the mild side of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but still used “fidgets” to help self-soothe when he felt over-stimulated. He loved fidgets that were spongy, spiky, soft, and sandy. Being his one-on-one aid helped me to understand the shared frustration of student and caretaker alike to constantly measure and meet the need to self-soothe in moments that were over or underwhelming.

What do you create for those who have difficulty feeling?
As a young, bi-racial man who grew up in an urban community where my friends and I graduating high school would have been a first for most families, starting a business was a farfetched idea. The goal was always to have a profession that paid…enough. Enough to not struggle. Enough to never question your next meal. Enough to spend time with your family. All the things that our parents did not have enough to do. So you will understand the miracle that was graduating college with a business degree.

Who said broken has no purpose?
There are many things the world uses to establish our value. They look at our colored pasts, our colored skin, the colors of our clothes, and try to tell us what we’re worth. But our dark scars are not our summation. My brown skin contains more than my flaws, but my light too. And royalty comes dressed in red robes and my grandma’s purple pajamas, and isn’t always adorned with a crown. We are redeemable. We are valuable. We are...worth it.
