the culler yeller
Walking through the familiar halls made everything seem small back then. My hand slowly grazed over the nubbly textured walls, once coated with a duller paint. It was now cleaner and thicker, as if to deny the cinderblock walls were ever there. Now they touted my alma matter’s team colors as if to attempt a neatly ingrained school spirit with a stripe, dividing the two-toned wall. The bold stripe rose upwards at the exits, seeming to cheer its students and staff to the entry path towards the gym and stadium.

malleable
There I was, uncontrollably trembling and trying my hardest to mind-trick the massive tears, billowing up, into retreating. My face was about to become the perfect storm- something I had refrained from happening for my three years of academic hell. If I am being honest, until I found my place, what has seemed my career of studentdom has been pretty-much as brutal. There I was in front of my favorite professor, about to confess what I had been in denial about all-along: I cannot make it.

My hands plunge into the water. Subtle perfume arises from the suds and the gentle hint of mint and citrus fill the surrounding air. As I cast my eyes out of our kitchen window, I gaze to the promises and the memories we have created in just over a year.

Fog blanketed the ground. I woke with excitement and bypassed the heavenly wafts of bacon and Ma Mae’s delectable waffles, made with her homemade blueberry syrup and pecans fresh from their farm. My galoshes loudly clomped as I joggled my way out my grandparents’ true front door: the gateway to their backyard. Past the tenderly cared for rose bushes and pecan trees I flew without a care in the world, for I knew the magic I was about to behold. I tore through the puddles and towards the picket fence and aimed left towards the barns.

the green wave
Driving from Clemson to the hospital where my grandmother was laying, seemed to take an eternity. Being one that favored physical maps and dealing with my own health challenges, did nothing to sway my travels to my favor. I made it in time to see her in a cognizant state. Everyone was filtering in and out of her room when I arrived.
