Within the Pages of a Book
Within the Pages of a Book Choosing a Night Time Story Many bed-time story books are available on bookstore shelves. I enjoy browsing through books to lull children to sleep with the understanding that they were loved and cherished and books that encourage a sleep full of positive thoughts and assurances of night time safety. In our home, however, bedtime stories were always chosen by our children. The personal favorites were read and re-read until the covers became dog-eared and the binding was broken or non-existent. Each child seemed to be drawn to particular books that became bedtime favorites. Now that our children are adults, I look back and understand why they were drawn to the books that they chose and how those much-loved books impacted on their futures.

Ashes of My Life
Ashes of My Life When I was in high school, a classmate’s house burned to the ground. In our small rural school, we rarely had friends who suffered the loss of their home, so we hardly knew how to respond to the news. I had a weekend to grapple with how to greet our friend when she returned to school the next school. Should I offer condolences or, to spare her feelings, pretend that I didn’t know about her loss? I was surprised to note that she was wearing a pair of green rain boots when she walked into our shared homeroom on Monday morning. She proudly announced that she had always hated the boots, but when she sorted though the ashes of her possessions, she knew that the boots would have survived the fire because they were the ugliest, most hated article of clothing she owned. Their “survival” gave her the courage to look forward to a brighter tomorrow. I was confused by her comment, but in awe of her courage, in the face of the horrible loss she had experienced. I occasionally thought of her odd, brave response to her personal disaster as I completed my schooling with my graduating class.

The Gift of Quilting
The Gift of Quilting Being raised in Pennsylvania Dutch country, I had always been in awe of the colorful quilts that hung on the carefully maintained farm wash-lines hung next to the dark colored garments worn by the Amish. The tourist shops, recognizing the value of these creations, placed a high price on the hand-made works of art. Some stores and auction houses required gloves to handle the quilts when examining the exact stiches and carefully mitered corners. Stories of quilting bees were fascinating but, not being Amish, I never attended such a gathering.

Fabric of Life
The Fabric of Life Nearly sixty years have passed, but I clearly remember the day when a coworker came into the office with a fabric work-of-art. The colorful piece, her first effort at quilting, received “oohs and ahs”. When I joined the group admiring her craftiness, my overly confident young adult reaction was, “I can certainly accomplish something like that!”.
