The Stranger
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. For as many nights as Jack Bradley could remember, he would wake abruptly from his restless slumber. In a state of gloomy reverie he would shuffle to the window, the holes in his socks catching and pulling splinters from the well-worn wood floor. After years of flipped ash trays and spilt coffee and whiskey, Jack had removed the carpet long ago. Something beckoned him to the window, almost by name. Not in any audible form, but he could feel it in his chest. The syllables of his name beating in syncopation with his heart, the purple clouds in the distance, an invitation from a nameless void.

The Thousand Year War
“There weren't always dragons in the Valley… at least not that anyone remembered. Great tales remained, becoming myths and legends of the Great War. 999 years ago, the young emperor Huangdi united the kingdom with the help of Ying Long, the Great Dragon, using Ying Long’s Yeouiju, which some believed to be the stone of all creation. It was a time of magic and mysticism with many creatures, long forgotten, freely roaming the kingdom. The many tribes worked harmoniously with the various dragon’s, who provided knowledge of the heavens and land. They came to be revered as gods. There was one god however, who was angered by the peace and harmony between the many races of Seoul. The God of War, Chiyou, leader of the Nine Li Tribe, sought to steal the great dragon’s Yeouiji, for the same stone used for creation, could also bring destruction. He had the head of a bull with brass horns; four eyes, one facing in every direction making him impossible to sneak up on. Chiyou’s six arms could wield the most terrible weapons and with the torso and legs of a massive bear, his speed and strength, truly terrifying….”

The Parcel
There had been nothing on the news, no radio broadcasts… no warning of the thunderous storm Jack Bradley now found himself engulfed in. Seemingly showing up out of nowhere, without warning, like all the horrible situations he found himself in. No end to the bad weather and black clouds that followed him around like a loyal dog. Cell phone bill is a month past due… there is a phone booth across the street, but why kid himself? There’s no one to call. What Jack thought of as his, “unfortunate destiny” had seen to that.

“Robert”: From the Other Side of the Valley
Link to Richard Groves' piece in The Winston-Salem Journal I recently returned to my beautiful home in San Francisco with my amazing and supportive girlfriend. We were attending the wedding of one of my “best friends.” A term I do not use lightly. Often times I find it difficult to use. So many variables to account for- time, quality, memories; and even these words do not seem enough to explain the kinship felt between this newly discovered brother. Pushing each other to create, and feel, and experience.

The words prodigy, savant, genius… all words used to describe Peter McDonagh. From an early age, great things were expected of Peter.
