The Follower
Tracy walked out into the dimly lit parking lot and pushed the button on her key to unlock her car. It was nearly midnight, the late summer air was cool and filled with the scent of nearby pine trees. She didn’t normally work this late. An upcoming fall vacation to Florida with her husband, Matt, urged her to pick up some extra shifts at the care center where she was a nurse. A deer in the meadow across from the parking lot dashed into the woods, startling her. She cursed under her breath and lit a cigarette as she slid into the driver’s seat. As she started the engine and drove down the long private road to the main street, she was glad to see the rest of the herd heading into the woods. She did not want to delay getting home. As she drove down the street towards the highway, she briefly considered getting a burger for dinner. She decided to instead finish up the leftovers from the previous night. She turned on the radio and cracked the window to flick her ashes. It wasn’t a long drive home, but the darkness made it feel longer.

Daddy's Girl
Ruby stretched her legs out in bed as the early morning sunshine streamed through her curtains. Her alarm clock had not sounded yet, she turned it off before her peace could be interrupted. She scrolled through her social media as she waited to wake up more. She could smell the fresh coffee in the kitchen that her husband, Mark, had left behind. Just as she was getting up to pour the first mug, her phone began ringing. “Ruby! He’s called five times already this morning! Will you be getting around soon?” “Momma?” Ruby stirred cream and sugar in her mug as she spoke. “Daddy knows we can’t visit until nine. Let me drink this cup here and grab a shower. It’s only seven-thirty. I’ll be there in an hour.” She quickly gulped her coffee and jumped in the shower. She combed her short blonde hair back and applied mousse to bring out her curls. She then slipped on a pair of soft capri pants and a t-shirt. Grabbing her purse and keys, she quickly texted Mark as she stepped into her tennis shoes. “Going to be a long day with Daddy. Dinner is in the fridge.” After getting a quick response, she started the engine and headed to her parents house. During the drive, she reflected on her father’s situation. He had been admitted to the hospital three days ago after falling in the living room. He had become weaker lately since he was hospitalized earlier in the year. It made taking care of him at home more difficult. His multiple health problems were becoming more advanced, which now made Ruby into a second caregiver for him.

The Twister and The Cat
Sandra stretched out on her living room couch after returning home from her morning shift at the grocery store. She closed her eyes, listening to the air conditioner whirring outside and the ice in her glass of lemonade crackling. Her Siamese cat, Rex, lay purring on her abdomen. She had the trailer house to herself for the day while her husband and his parents were out. She was glad they went to the city for medical appointments. She rarely had the small home to herself anymore and relished in the quiet. She drifted off to sleep, listening to the television playing a daytime drama quietly.

The Unexpected Patient.
Margot heaved a sigh as she parked her car next to the old brick building. Beginning her shift at the South Hollow Care Center wasn’t usually hard for her, but today was different. Margot had a ten day beach vacation starting tomorrow and the next twelve hours were the only thing keeping her from it. She gathered her purse and work bag and pulled her long chestnut hair into a ponytail before she headed inside. The smell of the crisp morning mountain air helped to wake her up, almost as much as the local gas station latte she sipped on as she clocked in. She greeted the weary night shift crew and got her report and cart keys. She could hear the usual morning sounds of residents waking, the kitchen staff banging pots and pans, and the caregivers conversing about assignment schedules. The smell of bacon and toast wafted through the halls and Margot was immediately grateful that she had eaten breakfast before leaving this morning.

Lights, Camera, Action.
• Nancy had seen him before. Many times before, in fact she saw him nearly every night. Jeff was a maintenance man at the assisted living center where Nancy worked nights as a nurse. He was generally there to be available in the building for any issues that came up at night. Usually just unclogging toilets or changing lightbulbs. The people living in the center were filthy rich and demanded that someone be there at night so that their needs never went unmet. He wasn’t conventionally handsome. He was just under six feet tall. His arms and chest were muscular. His brown curly hair was a little longer than most men wore but it was combed back neatly. His face was round and he wore a day old beard. He was quiet but always pleasant with Nancy. Usually just a smile or a wave as they passed each other in the hallway. Nancy hadn’t paid much attention to him before, however, since she caught her boyfriend in bed with a barmaid, she found herself looking a little more at Jeff.

Night In The Life Of A Long Term Care Nurse
This story was written in March 2020 5:30 PM: My alarm goes off. I set it a little early because waking up for me is apparently a process. I grab a cup of tea and read the news on my phone. My husband is usually home by now and we comment on how many cases our state has confirmed. I double check the schedule app for work in case any changes have been made.
