The Bones of the Dragons
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. In those days, the raids were frequent. Several times a moon, we heard the warning drums. We prepared to lose children. The morning after a raid, people would emerge from their homes with furtive, searching eyes. They looked to see who mourned, who was missing. Who was left.

The Winter Light
Maddy woke one night to the stars swirling on her ceiling. This didn’t scare Maddy at all, though it would have her older sister. Instead, Maddy lay mesmerized until she heard a noise outside her window. Shuffle, tap, shuffle, tap. She pushed the covers back and climbed out of bed.

Thief
I’m a thief. But don’t compare me to a common thief. I don’t steal for me. When I first met the man, I was only eighteen. It was a mistake, getting involved. I was young and stupidly trusting. I thought he wanted to help me. We needed so much in those days. That first time he asked me to take something, I wanted to say no. He told me he had my little sister. He hid her somewhere. Blindfolded, scared in the dark. I took a box out of a stranger's garage to get her back.

Sleeping Daughter
The Queen’s daughter drifted to sleep. Her eyes fell slowly, losing their battle. She held her mother’s hands tightly in hers, kissing them both softly with her perfectly soft lips. When she was asleep, the Queen stayed and watched. She waited and she grieved.
