Hearing The Tree
As I watched Trey walk back to his seat, our eyes met. I held my breath and waited to see if there was any trace of recognition on his face. But he either didn’t remember me or he was so lost in grief, it didn’t register. For a moment, I almost laughed as I remembered the day he called when we were in bed. She showed me his name in her phone was spelled Très. “He’s so very, my sweet Trey, that I told him his name should be spelled in French.” She giggled and answered the call, “Hello Très Trey? No. No, I can’t right now. I’m with Alana.”

Chocolate Cake
My hands were shaking as I walked up to the podium. Even after the hundreds of times I’d done it, from awards acceptances to guest lectures, speaking in public still made me nervous. I wanted so badly to do right by Ulli. She had always done right by me. I looked out at the mourners, dressed in bright colors (at her bequest) but with sad faces. Please don’t let me choke. I cleared my throat and began.

“You’ve got to protect your goal!” my mother shouted at me. The young woman across from me, the one who had been thrown from a horse, had just scored again. It was her turn to stand up at the air hockey table and that seemed to be giving her an advantage. I sat awkwardly in my wheelchair trying to block the puck.
