From a Small Town...
I have spent too much time looking at my guitars over the past year. Jeff Beck passed away and I gave my Fender Stratocaster a workout. David Crosby passed and I had my acoustic ready and going through my fingers with my memories and skills. And then, after a day where I planned lessons, had online interviews for online material in my courses, found myself returning to a festival to celebrate its final day as a volunteer, I looked at my cellphone.

Three Little Pigs vs. The Wolf. Top Story - August 2023.
I really need to record this one... It is a simple case, but I am not going to miss a single detail before I appear in court. There are stacks of files and documents, and I have represented Goose, Grimm and Associates for too long to make any errors. Two of the legal assistants, Geppetto and Van Winkle, were sent home for the day – they would be back for Monday’s first session – but I am not done yet. There was no demand to settle things out of court. That was not a surprise with such a gruesome case involving murder and property damage. There seemed to be a real vendetta here, something that just could not be settled between them.

A Return on Your Investment
Has everyone found a seat? Can you all see this in the back? Good, good… We will begin. I want to thank you all for coming in at what must be a very busy time of the year for you all. We do appreciate that you are all important members of the business community and that this last financial quarter was quite a difficult one for many in this room. Not for all of you, of course, but for enough of you that perhaps this meeting may improve your own outlook on the upcoming year.

My Writing Routine
I am very grateful to the staff at Vocal for creating four new pages for the writers out there who want to discuss their craft, be critiqued, learn that there are others out there who are creating work that is remarkable, and to discuss how they do it. And how do we do it? I have written a little about the writing lives of the ones I have admired. Much of what I have taken for my routine comes from the advice read and heard online, from the biographies that I found and reviewed, and other teachers. Rarely – and I blame myself for this – I never spoke directly to writers to find out how they did it. I have received a few autographs at many readings and conferences, but I never found or made an opportunity to pick their brains about their work.

Supertramp
“Take the long way home… Take the long way home…” K. was not really listening when they ended the class for the day. The walkman he got for his birthday was in his bag and he was smart enough not to let anyone else know about it until late in the day. The thing about it was he made sure that he put the tape in first before he came to school. They would have asked about it if they saw it (no one else liked that group). He let the orange earphones dangle near his ears from the hook on the shared clothes rack.
