Amid the noise, I was just another immigrant in the land of the free, begging citizens to practice their democratic right to vote. If they refused, I simply screamed at them to shut the hell up or messaged: “Don’t text my damn phone again!”

Memories of a Love That I Can't Remember
Dear Momma, As we grow and create new experiences, our earlier memories get lost in the endless reservoir of past experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Some people have faint memories of when they were as young as three years old. I have blurry and grey memories of an earlier time playing with a friend that taught me the love of friendship, and running to a house that I no longer remember. I remember the taste of the drink Auntie Dimple gave me as dessert, but I don’t remember the drink itself. I remember the sound of her mixing it in a cup, and her smiling face when she gave it to me.

A Towering Figure of Femininity
Six feet tall. 195 pounds. Toned biceps and triceps. Strong legs. Big voice. Big opinions. Big laugh. All of these characteristics define who I am in physique and disposition, but none of these seemingly manly attributes negate my womanhood and femininity. The traditional and conservative idea is that femininity and weakness are synonymous. Many expect women to be small and unassuming, and that has never and will never be me. My height alone commands a room; and when I add my big voice and opinions, I tend to overwhelm some people.

Ackee: The Fruit That Saved My Family
In 2004, I was finally old enough to understand the true dangers of a natural disaster. All my life I had heard about Jamaica’s unfortunate history with hurricanes, but until Hurricane Ivan, I did not realize how serious it could be. The media inundated us with replays of 1988’s Hurricane Gilbert, and painted pictures of an economically and structurally devastated Jamaica. The death doll was record-breaking, the rate of Jamaicans displaced from roofless homes were astronomical, and the stories of no electricity for months after the hurricane scared the living shit out of me.

3 Things I Learnt from Being Friend Zoned
At some point or another, we have all been either put in the zone or have put someone in the zone. I am accustomed to putting men in the friend zone. I don't do it to be a bitch or anything, I promise! But, more often than welcomed, men that I am not interested in pursue me romantically. And I guess there is the option of just turning someone down in a way that doesn't involve the friend zone, but I would imagine that that option is harsher and more cruel. Hopefully, none of us have to find out just how harsh or cruel.

To My 30-Year-Old Self
As we age, we expect that our wisdom will come from the lessons that lie ahead. Society has conditioned us to believe that the older we are, the wiser we are. We don't ever imagine that our younger selves could teach us lessons even 10 years later. Here, in my mid-20s, is where I think my most valuable lessons will come. So why not share what I have learned so far with my 30-year-old self?

My Friend's Friend
"My friend likes you." Words from my best friend meant to incite a reaction. For months, Kitty tried to tell me that her friend from home, Norway, is interested in me. But, what did it matter if he lived 5000 miles away? It didn't. I never thought about him. Never cared about my friend's friend.
