The Map of Alaja
I brought the dirty child to my rider, Danyoff, thinking he would know better what to do with it. I had discovered her in the woods, when a quarter of an hour after the battle ended I heard tiny noises of distress coming from beneath a large blueberry bush. Upon following the sounds I came upon her whimpering there, with smears of purple juice covering her round little face.

Fearless Bridge
There she was. Sitting quite happily beside an old moss-covered stump, her face tilted upwards as she followed an orange butterfly with her golden eyes. She was smiling the way only human children can, with the unfettered joy of truly being in the moment. For her, there was only those fluttering wings against the blue sky, and maybe the scent of damp earth and young spring grass in her nose. How I wished that she could have remained there forever, untainted by what I knew was yet to come.

The Missing Ingredient
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Joey Riley might not have noticed it at all if he hadn't hit the sharp stone on his bicycle and gotten a flat tire at the very spot on the dirt road where there was a gap in the dark forest where the old path came out, and you could look right in and see the old log building, rotting away. Blink and you miss it if you're driving by.

How to Extract Yourself from a Kayak in 7 Steps

The Book of Denya Léna
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Their rising came with the reading of the fourth chapter of the Book of Denya Léna, and by that time the people expected them. They had come to accept that all of the young witch's predictions came to pass soon after the words upon the page were consumed by human eyes, and they spent the few days leading up to the arrival of the dragons going about their business with hands cupped against brows, shading their eyes as they looked to the sky.
