As a time traveler, James had always dreamed of using his powers to change the course of history for the better. He had traveled to many different eras, observing the past and pondering how he might make a difference. But for years, he had been too afraid to actually try to change anything. He had read too many cautionary tales of well-intentioned time travelers inadvertently making things worse, and he didn't want to be responsible for making history worse.
