Singing Their Hearts Out: Watch This Show If You're Missing Julie and the Phantoms
I don't know if Netflix expected Julie and the Phantoms to become such a hit when it premiered on the streaming service in the fourth quarter of 2020. Helmed by acclaimed director (and choreographer) Kenny Ortega of High School Musical and Descendants fame, the show was based off a popular Brazilian series that showcased a talented young singer-songwriter and her three ghostly bandmates. The Netflix version is not too off the mark with each episode clocking in at about a half-hour over its first season of nine episodes. The eponymous Julie is joined by her three phantoms Luke, Alex, and Reggie—all of whom have vibrant personalities that mesh well with each other as they interact together and with Julie. Their antics on- and off-stage manage to be engaging and uplifting as they navigate their performances (usually at least one an episode) and their existential crises of the waiting afterlife.

Let's face it: there are a lot of shows (and movies) that tackle the purported lives of royalty. You have your British royalty spanning the ages (everything from The Tudors to The Windsors) and your French royalty gamut (heard of Reign or Versailles?) yet not much else. With The Crown becoming a gradual hit for Netflix over its past four seasons and the real lives of royalty recently crashing back into the worldwide public conversation, it's hard not to try and figure out why. What is our fascination with royalty? What draws us to these dramatics among princes and princesses, duchesses and dukes, and the ways of courtly life? Is it curiosity or envy? Or are we just keen to see ways in which royals struggle just the same as any other red-blooded human beings? The world may never know.

Trigger warning for mental illness and psychosis People who are “going crazy” often have no idea they’re losing their grip on reality. Television and movies have a tendency to dramatize mental breakdowns, but they’re much more like a roller coaster, with upward turns and drastic downfalls, rather than a bomb exploding. When you think of someone “losing it.” you probably imagine a person who just “snaps.” And then bad things happen. The police get called. There may be casualties. Someone might be led away to sit in the back of a cop car before going to jail (or an asylum-like place, as we’re led to believe in a film like 2019’s Joker).

Each bell toll told Neve that she was losing more and more time. She looked down at her pale hands as they began to wrinkle, shriveling just as they did every day at this hour. By the moment the hour bell finished its song of eight, she could see gray hair beginning to sprout from the roots growing from her skull. Neve was only twenty-one, but she easily could have been mistaken for her fifties in this lapse of her particular curse.

Nathan tried loosening me up by first taking me to a wine bar. I ordered the Merlot (reminding myself too much of my mother as I did so) while Nate settled for a Sprite with a splash of vodka. How Georgie Found Me
Once upon a time... It was just another July day when I went down to my uncle's car to see if he had a pack of cigarettes in his glove compartment (for him, not me).
