A Burning Heart
Chapter One There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Why would there be dragons here? It was 21st century, it was a time of cars, of machines and computers. The electric era, the digital age, the slick turn of the century and the race of technology. It was reality, not a fucking Tolkien story. Fairy tales weren’t real and dragons didn’t exist.

Painting Lessons for Fairies
It was late fall when I found the fairy tangled up in Grover’s fur after our morning walk through the woods. It wasn’t uncommon to find leaves, small twigs and burrs snarled and snagged in the German Shepherd’s bushy coat after every walk. The thick fur was practically a magnet for forest debris, and it didn’t help that Grover had to bound through the densest part of the forest without hesitation. He always came when I called, but all it took was a second in the brush and Grover was soon carrying half the forest in his fur home.

Apocalyptic Poetry
It was the end of the world and she was scavenging words. Toni knew that there were better, far more important things to search for. Here at the edge of a burnt out Chicago, close enough to see the charred remains but far enough to avoid the still smoldering embers at the center. Cities were dangerous places to be now.
