Voice of Reason
The multi-layer chocolate cake glistens under the transparent glass atop the elevated crystal pedestal; a pretentious, over-the-top display for such a modestly set supper of red wine and a pack of Virginia Slims: weak supporting characters of tonight’s performance atop the antique oak table overpowering the small dining room where this scene is set. The chocolate cake at the center, the obvious star of the show, front and center amidst an otherwise lacking dinner spread. It has been prepared with culinary precision, and intentionally placed as the centerpiece.

Misery Loves Company
The vagrant exploded out of the rickety barn doors and into the stormy night, rattling the hinges angrily, and sending a palpable shudder up through the walls. He fell face first into the mud outside, but did not stop running despite the storm that raged across the vast Iowa plains. He disappeared into the maze of corn fields and did not return. The barn doors from whence he had emerged flapped in the flashing wind and rain, closed and then opened, in cadence with the thunder’s rhythm; beckoning anyone bold enough to enter the gaping mouth of pitch blackness.

"Other" Love
Smooth, shiny, I couldn't see the locket. But it was etched in my mind’s eye. Paralysis had set in everywhere, but I still felt it dangle. It was still around my neck. I hadn’t slept in days, so dreaming was welcome, and the locket was still with me in this “real” world.
