‘Norway. It’s right at the top of the world, you know.’ ‘Yeah, it’s pretty far up.’ I don’t meet Freya’s eyes. Instead, I begin leafing through the stack of junk mail on the table and pretend to be really interested in a hardware store catalogue.

Hobble Gobble Gumpling Land
‘Hobble Gobble Gumpling Land. You can go there if you are lucky enough to have been chosen by the fairies – but, only if you are one of the best kids in existence. You see, only one girl and one boy get to go each year and they are selected because they are smart, courageous and strong.’ I pause, relishing the look of delight on the faces of my third-grade students as I retell the story my dad created.

Endless Summer
Derek opens the heart-shaped locket and spits into it. His reaction is so forceful, spray hits me in the face. ‘Oh!’ I exclaim, taking a step backward. He closes the locket and saliva oozes out the sides, dripping to the floor. There is no shame on his furious face as he dangles the token of love between us. He yells with an intensity that turns his face red. ‘That is literally what you did to me!’

Blue Eyes
In his heavy panelled suit, the Magna labours toward her. He is one of the herd of hybrids boarding the ship, but his purposeful step out of the current draws her attention. Gry thinks these laboratory manufactured men look like a swarm of cockroaches - blackened as they are by the residue of the dark stone they mine. They have been designed to scurry and to gather; efficiency born from engineered strength and limited intelligence.
