ACT
Dear Jim, It is wonderful that you are about to take the ACT. However, it would seem that you need some questions answered first, which is reasonable. The ACT reading test is a 35 minute test with 40 questions about reading passages. Each reading passage is about 750 words long and there are 4 passages total. There is one passage about Humanities, Prose Fiction, Science, and Social Science, all with 10 questions per passage. You should know the directions beforehand, so as to not waste time. You should know the layout of the test. On the left side of each column of reading material, there are numbers. These numbers tell you the line number, and they appear every 5 lines. This helps you quickly reference the lines that a question refers to. After reading each passage, the questions are in no particular order and vary in difficulty. You will be given an answer sheet, separate from the test booklet that has the passages and questions, you will use the answer sheet to record your answers. It is important to note that nothing you write in the test booklet is graded, so make sure you use the answer sheet.

Horribly Horrific
Plutarch Octavius was born into one of the wealthiest families in all of Europe. All the other noble families within a fortnight’s journey arrived to witness the birth of a new elite. Plutarch had the blackest hair that anybody had ever seen, eyes that looked like ice, and the fairest skin in all of the country, and possibly the world. Everyone in England with a title knew Plutarch and his family, for they were rumored to be the descendants of an Ancient Roman house. As a youth, he was admired, almost worshipped, by elites. He supped with royal families from all over the world; he was educated by the greatest physicians, philosophers, historians, mathematicians, and holy men. He was destined to inherit the fortune and title of his family, given the fact the he was an only child, and the only child of his father, the sole presumptive of the family’s assets. He was meant for greatness since birth; however, fate took a darker course of action.

Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Setup I lay down on my new bed, in my new room, in my new house, in a new town. Too many “news” for comfort. My parents have moved us to the big city. Population: 1,896,743. I have lived my entire life in a town with a staggering population of only about three thousand—too small to have a consistent and regular census. Tomorrow is the first day of my senior year in a mega high that looks like a university on steroids. I hate them. My parents, they have uprooted our entire lives in order to “work on their marriage,” which is just fancy talk for saying mom cheated on dad.

Mania
It starts with a sleepless night. I roll out of bed several hours too early to a world still sound asleep. I start the coffee pot and pretend that it's not 3am. I wait several hours to go to school and pass the time by listening to music. Something is different. The music feels like honey to my ears. I can't get enough of it. I'm dancing around my kitchen and laughing hysterically at nothing in particular. Life could not be more satisfying. I pass many days like this, sleep slowly becoming more foreign to me. Euphoria becomes the only thing I feel. My desires for everything are so high, as are my senses. I crave beauty and must have it. Beautiful clothes, beautiful shoes, and beautiful men. I feel sexy and intelligent and I know anything I want I can have. The world becomes my playground. Weeks fly by and now I'm sleeping maybe two hours per night. The hallucinations begin. At first they are nothing, fleeting objects out of the corner of my eye. But rather quickly my brain starts to bring to life a personal hell. Men with knifes around every corner, polar bears in my yard and the ground slithers beneath my feet like snakes. I hear running water and bangs and pops that never happen. The world that was so intoxicating a few days ago is now hell on earth. I haven't slept in four days and I know they are coming for me. They aren't my real family, they are imposters!
