CHAPTER FIVE Right on the mark, the satellite compass registers my location. The Rip still exists. Hard to tell in a desert if a dust storm came through. If there is no evidence at the station, I will never know. I keep driving.

CHAPTER SIX I try to explain to Marvin how the transition from one side to the other while seeing the storm felt unexpected, and a little disconcerting. But I am not sure exactly what it is that I am trying to explain. He smiles. He assures me that going from one reality to another is something that should be disconcerting and unexpected. After all, he has never met anyone else that has done that. Nor has he ever heard of anyone that has done that. I realize that Marvin has never really been interested in learning about The Rip, or crossing through it. Even when we first got here, he didn't seem that surprised how we got here. Once we figured out that it existed, and that we could go back and forth, he was satisfied that it is a possibility, but also seemed to be over it. He never even mentions it anymore. When I say I am going back to send messages, his replies are underwhelmed and disinterested if anything. Yet now he assures me I should be disconcerted.

CHAPTER FOUR We had a few days with lots of travellers. Webby didn't even make an appearance for most of them. And showed no affection to any of them. None of their home planets were earth, or any of the other missing planets. Doesn't help prove my hypothosis, but doesn't disprove it either.

CHAPTER TWO The storm sounded like transport ships were landing on the floor above us as we tried to make ourselves at ease in the shielded suite. It has comfortable furniture, an entertainment console, an office area, a stocked kitchen on one end, a full bath, and several separate rooms with bunks. It was actually nicer than many of the apartments I had lived in before. But the noise made it hard for us to relax. Well, except Webby. He had curled up for a nap on the top of a tall cabinet.

CHAPTER THREE After the storm moved away, Marvin got back to work. He had to check the adjustment that Scheduler made to arrival times for expected travellers. He likes to make sure he is in the transport room for all arrivals. He doesn't really have to be; the AI would give the travellers instructions on where to wait for the next jump, and how long it will be. Marvin just likes to make sure travellers knew that in this bleak environment there is a human to interface with. He also checks in with Mapper to make sure there are no known problems at destinations. Again, Scheduler and Mapper would figure that out without him, but he says he likes to be able to reassure anxious travellers, and he gets info from Traveller's Friend about the current events and weather so he can make small talk with them if they seem the type that needs that. He likes meeting the travellers and learning about them as much as he loves learning about the technology that moves them from place to place.

CHAPTER ONE “Where's Webby!” Marvin, previously calm as he described to me the mass devastation that can be caused by a windstorm like the approaching one, is suddenly panicked when he doesn't see his cat as we head for the shielded level of the building. I yelled back over the roaring and screeching winds to let him know that Webby already went down the stairs. Marvin laughed, and his usual calm demeanor returned. He asked if I was still happy I decided to stay here.
