Jedd The Dog
"No, we're not getting a dog," I said bluntly. It wasn't because I didn't like dogs, I loved them, but as an eighteen year old, full-time student in his first rental home, getting a dog was not exactly a convenient choice. There was no way I was losing my bond money over soiled carpet and a dug-up yard. Emily, one of my three housemates, however, had other plans.

Fruits of Labour
Todd was perhaps the worst boss to have ever existed. Not only was he abhorrently stupid, but it seemed he put the entirety of his limited brain capacity towards making life as miserable as possible for his employees. He was ambiguously aged, with leathery tanned skin, frown wrinkles, a short-back-and-sides haircut, and an outfit that somehow always incorporated a designer belt. “Somewhere between twenty-eight and forty-five” was the verdict Austin and the other employees had come to under hushed gossip in the lunchroom.

10,000 Pounds. Top Story - August 2021.
Abuse can be so incredibly difficult to recognise at times. Especially when it’s so close and personal that it’s impossible to step back and see the big picture for what it really is. Maggie knew her boyfriend was a sadistic, controlling sociopath, but a part of her had always been in denial about it. So she let his passive aggressive comments burn into her skin, day after day, as pieces of her were chipped and chiselled away.

Go to Sleep
The closet was only four feet from the end of Thomas’ bed. He knew because he’d measured it. Not many seven-year-olds were savvy enough to measure the exact distance from their beds to their closets, or from their beds to the door for that matter, but Thomas was.

Shark Fin Soup
How long have I been laying here, paralysed and motionless on the ocean floor? Who knows. The pain subsided hours ago as salt water seeped into my wounds and swept the blood away. It was almost peaceful to watch it disperse through the water, like clouds drifting with the wind in the sky above. Now I'm just waiting. That's all I can do - wait to slip away.

“I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other.”

The Problem with Wednesdays
No matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesn’t stop for your grief – Faraaz Kazi Prologue Wednesday was undoubtedly the worst day of the week for Aubrey, or at least it used to be. Now it was all she knew. Every day was a Wednesday, and every day was the same:

Eat, Prey, Love
Today we had to eat Chuck. I’m not bothered by it – he was kind of a rude guy anyway – but it is a bit of a concern. Eating members of your own tribe never sits well, regardless of how much they’re disliked. Unfortunately, when there’s a shortage of food, the menu has to be… extended.

Dear Interface
[System Entry #011819 - Earth_Human_Survey_Day_1/5] Dear Interface, Today I saw them. Not just an image of them, but real, breathing humans. They’re disgusting. Their physical form is not morphologically dissimilar to that of an ape – another species which also inhabits this planet. The humans, however, seem to have a sense of superiority – and much less hair. Of course, this isn’t new information, but to see one of them up close was still astonishing nevertheless.

Only Human
The building trembled lightly as another explosion echoed from the distance, causing the ceiling to cough out dust from between its crevices. Constantly and without fail, the alarm system’s buzz rang over and over again. Its loud persistent sound was rivalled only by the clearly spoken recording of a woman’s voice as it echoed through the room, “Warning, the city has been breached...”.
