In late January 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers, led by Igor Dyatlov, embarked on a trek through the Ural Mountains in Russia. The group consisted mostly of students from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, with Dyatlov being an experienced outdoorsman and leader. Their goal was to reach Otorten Mountain. However, when the group failed to check in as planned, a search operation was launched. Eventually, their tent was found on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl, which translates to "Dead Mountain" in the indigenous Mansi language. The tent was torn open from the inside, and all of the group's belongings, including shoes and warm clothing, were left behind.
