Why is Russia's sole aircraft carrier a complete embarrassment among other navies?
Aircraft Carriers are possibly the most accurate indication of a country's military capability at sea. They are both awe-inspiring and terrifying, making them ideal not just for projecting strength but also for serving as a symbol for an entire fleet. With so many advantages, what makes a nation like Russia, whose army relies heavily on displays of power, only possess one? When compared to the ultra sophisticated Ford class carriers that the US is putting out to sea, the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's sole carrier, looks more like a heaping pile of old Soviet period hardware. So, why is Russia not producing new aircraft carriers?
