It is believed that they were first used by the Celts to protect their horses' hooves from wear and tear caused by the rough terrain they traveled on. The first horse shoes were made of iron and were nailed onto the hooves of horses. This invention allowed horses to travel longer distances and carry heavier loads, which made them more useful for transportation and farming.
